Seoul, Korea - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Young-sun) will hold the International Conference on the ASEAN-Korea Partnership together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the ROK, the Korea Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (KISEAS), and the JoongAng Ilbo on 30 August 2017 at Lotte Hotel, Seoul, Korea. Held under the theme of “Partnering for Tomorrow,” the Conference aims to highlight developments in the ASEAN-Korea partnership in the past three decades and share insights on how the relations will further evolve.

Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre noted that, “Founded 50 years ago, ASEAN has made great achievements becoming a successful model for regional integration. ASEAN and Korea have also seen great progress since their dialogue relations were first established in 1989. For Korea, ASEAN is a partner with which the country can navigate through growing uncertainties and develop mutually beneficial partnership. It is timely and relevant to hold this Conference this year as it marks the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN and ASEAN-ROK Cultural Exchange Year. I hope that through this meaningful occasion, we can gain valuable insight on laying out future directions to deepen ASEAN-Korea partnership.”

Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre, Le Luong Minh, Secretary General of ASEAN, Kang Kyung-wha, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the ROK, and Alan Peter Cayetano, Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines are expected to deliver remarks at the Opening Ceremony. The Conference is composed of two sessions: i) 50th Anniversary of ASEAN and Prospects for ASEAN-Korea Relations and ii) Socio-cultural Cooperation between ASEAN and Korea. The first session will cover issues of political-security and economy. In the following session, socio-cultural issues such as people mobility, education, ASEAN-understanding, and popular culture, will be discussed to build a firm foundation for a long-lasting partnership between ASEAN and Korea.

Key speakers include Ong Keng Yong, Former Secretary General of ASEAN and Executive Deputy Chairman of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University from ASEAN and Lee Choong-lyol, Director General of the KISEAS and Professor at the Korea University from Korea.
