The ASEAN-Korea Centre organized for the first time, a special ASEAN Art Exhibition dedicated to introducing the artworks of 30 young artists representing 10 ASEAN Member States, and celebrating the ASEAN-ROK Cultural Exchange Year and the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN. The Exhibition was held from 25 July to 20 August as a part of the Asia Students Young Artists Art Festival (2017 ASYAAF), a renowned art festival co-organized by Chosun-ilbo and Seoul Design Foundation for over 500 Korean and international artists under the age of 35.
The Opening Ceremony of the ASEAN Art Exhibition was held on 25 July, where Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre, Long Dimanche, Ambassador of Cambodia and Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Seoul, as well as Ambassadors and diplomats from ASEAN Embassies attended.
In hopes to bring greater success to the program and promote exchange among young artists of ASEAN and Korea, the AKC invited one artist from each AMS to Seoul from 24-27 July, offering them the opportunity to participate in promotional activities for their artworks through “Conversation with Artists”, as well as the ASEAN-Korea Art Forum on 25 July.
The ASEAN-Korea Art Forum, which took place at 25 July at Moogaewon, a Korean traditional cultural facility in Seoul, invited renowned figures from the Korean art circle, such as Suh Jin-suk, Director of Nam June Paik Art Center, and Chung Hyung-min, Professor from College of Fine Arts of Seoul National University. At the Forum, the ASEAN artists, together with young Korean artists, enjoyed an in-depth discussion on the topics of local art trends, measures to support young artists, and area for future cooperation between ASEAN and Korea.
The invited artists also enjoyed networking opportunities with graduate students of College of Arts at Seoul National University, visiting their studios and sharing an in-depth discussion on their work-in-progress and ideas for personal and career development. Lastly, the artists took study visits to renowned galleries in Seoul, such as the Seoul National University Museum of Art and National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, where they explored possibilities and received inspiration for their future works.
