The 20th ASEAN Lecture Series, themed ‘Multiculturalism and Diversity’, held its fifth lecture in the ASEAN Hall at the ASEAN-Korea Centre (AKC) on 15 November 2018.
Prior to the lecture, guests were given the opportunity to enjoy traditional Thai food like ‘Green Curry’ and ‘Roti’, which is a type of flatbread.
Following this, Dr. Youk Su-hyun, Senior Researcher at the Center for Social Sciences in Seoul National University gave a lecture on the topic ‘Korean as a cultural capital’. In this lecture, Ms. Youk talked about how the increase in Vietnam’s investment into South Korea has led to an increase in the number of large and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) venturing from South Korea into the Vietnamese market. Consequently, this phenomenon has led to a rise in demand and popularity of the Korean language in Vietnam, with about 2,000 Korean language majors graduating from universities in Vietnam that offers this major annually. One of the main reasons to why this is so is
because career prospects are generally more promising, financially and otherwise, for youths who
majored in the Korean language.
