Special lecture on Pramoedya Ananta Toer, a Great Indonesian Novelist

- Prof. Koh Young Hun to give lecture at the ASEAN-Korea Centre on 20 June

Seoul, Republic of Korea - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Young-sun) will hold a Special Lecture on Pramoedya Ananta Toer at the Centre on 20 June 2016. Marking the 10th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest Indonesian novelists, this special lecture aims at exploring culture and society of Indonesia more deeply through the literature by Pramoedya. 

*Pramoedya Ananta Toer (1925-2006) is an Indonesian novelist, best known for the Buru Quartet, “This Earth of Mankind,” “Child of All Nations,” “Footsteps,” and “Hose of Glass.” He was nominated several times for the Nobel Prize for literature. 


Koh Young Hun, Professor at the Department of Malay-Indonesian of the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, who published the biography of Pramoedya written in Bahasa Indonesia in 2011, will give a lecture. As one of the leading experts on Pramoedya as well as Indonesian culture, Prof. Koh will present Indonesia’s battle for independence as well as traditional society and bureaucracy in Java portrayed in the literature. In the Q&A session, two-way discussion between Prof. Koh and audience will be also conducted. 


Kim Young-sun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre noted that, “The ASEAN-Korea Centre has been implementing various work programs to introduce diverse cultures of the 10 ASEAN Member States to the Korean people so that they could better understand and feel the ASEAN closer. I wish this Special Lecture would provide a rare opportunity to understand Indonesia’s culture and society more deeply through the literature of Pramoedya.”
