“ASEAN Week 2022” introduces the value of ASEAN handicraft and fabrics

- ASEAN-Korea Centre presents unique fabrics and related tourism destinations of 10 ASEAN countries at “ASEAN Week 2022” -

- To take place from November 10-13 at Cociety, Seongsu-dong -


ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Hae-yong) will organize “ASEAN Week 2022”, which will exhibit ASEAN fabrics and lifestyle at the Cociety in Seongsu-dong, Seoul from November 10 to 13*. “ASEAN Week” is an annual event organized by the Centre since 2019 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN-Korea Centre as well as the 2019 ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit in Busan. The “ASEAN Week” is a multi-cultural showcase of the diverse culture and tourism resources of the 10 ASEAN countries to the Korean public. For this year, the event will introduce the unique fabrics of ASEAN countries as well as the tourism destinations related to the production of these fabrics.

Held under the theme of ‘Ancient Futures - Treasures of ASEAN Fabric’, the exhibition will showcase the delicate and sustainable fabric items made by ASEAN master artisans, produced based on traditional weaving craftmanship that has been passed down through generations. The presented fabrics have also been recreated to accommodate modern designs thus introducing the values of ASEAN fabrics that connects art and everyday life as well as past-present-future. In particular, the exhibition includes the ‘Pua Kumbu’ of Malaysia which have inspired world famous shoe designer, Jimmy Choo’s shoe collection; the ‘Lotus fabric’ of Myanmar used by Loro Piana to make premium apparel; and ‘Lanh My A silk’ of Vietnam that is often used by Vietnamese Designer Cong Tri whose designs have been worn by K-pop star Rose of Blackpink. In addition to the fabric displays, visitors can also view the fabric production process via video which will also provide them glimpses of the related tourism destinations in ASEAN. Seongsu-dong is the hub of rising artists in Seoul and a region frequently visited by the younger generation in Korea. The location which features a cultural complex space with numerous culture and arts platforms will provide a good opportunity to present the culture and lifestyle of ASEAN. In addition, a variety of interactive events and souvenirs will be provided for visitors. As this year’s exhibition is the first event that gather fabrics of all 10 ASEAN countries in one place, it is expected to provide an opportunity to raise awareness of the cultural value of ASEAN and the globalization of ASEAN traditional fabrics.
