Korea and Indonesia to Expand Collaboration in Animation Industry

Korea and Indonesia to Expand Collaboration in Animation Industry

- Business delegation from Korea’s animation sector to visit Indonesia to share experience and seek cooperation at the “Indonesia-Korea Animation Industry Cooperation Forum” (12 - 14 February, Jakarta) -

The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Lee Hyuk) will dispatch a business delegation comprising of representatives from 15 Korean animation companies including Iconics (“Pororo”) and Vooz Club (“Canimal”) to Jakarta, Indonesia from 12 to 14 February. The mission will study the recent trends of the animation industry in Indonesia and explore areas of possible cooperation.

On 13 February, the delegation will take part in the “Indonesia-Korea Animation Industry Cooperation Forum”, co-organized by the Centre and the Ministry of Trade of Indonesia. The Forum will be an opportunity for Korean companies to share with Indonesian participants some of the strategies and best practices in developing, producing and exporting animated content.

During the visit, the Korea Animation Producers’ Association (KAPA) will also conclude an MOU with its counterpart, Indonesia Animation Industry Association (AINAKI). The MOU is expected to provide an institutional framework for expanded cooperation in the future. Finally, on 14 February, the participants will have time to engage in 1:1 business meetings to discuss the specifics for tangible cooperation.

The Korean business delegation will also be visiting Indonesia’s Creative Contents Agency (BEKRAF) under the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, and two major animation studios, MNC Studio and Little Giantz, to gain first-hand information on the local creative content industry and the animation market.

Recognizing the potential of the creative industry to boost economic development, President Jokowi is nurturing Indonesia’s creative sector with an aim to become a global creative economy. As such, the animation sector forms one of the 16 sectors of Indonesia’s creative economy industry that have been selected as the driving force of Indonesia’s economic development.

Lee Hyuk, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre, commented, “in Indonesia, the population under the age of 14, who are the major consumers of animated productions, make up 1/4 of the total population. Moreover, amid the government’s strong commitment to further strengthen the creative industry, the animation market in Indonesia is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.” He added that “the future of bilateral cooperation in this area looks bright in view of the high demand for Korean animated content in Indonesia.” A number of Korean animations such as “Pororo” and “Tayo” are now broadcasted on public channels in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, increased cooperation between Korea and Southeast Asian countries in the field of content development including animated productions has been emphasized during the 2019 ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit as the two regions seek to further upgrade their partnership.
