ASEAN and Korean youth to experience sustainable tourism in Indonesia

- ASEAN-Korea Centre to hold ASEAN Community-based Tourism Program 2018 in Yogyakarta (3-7 January 2019)

Yogyakarta, Indonesia – The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Lee Hyuk) will organize the ASEAN Community-based Tourism (CBT) Program 2018 in Desa Wisata Nglanggeran, Yogyakarta, Indonesia from 3 to 7 January 2019 under the theme of “Youth Fostering Sustainable Tourism Development.” CBT is a form of tourism that seeks to empower local communities by allowing village member’s participation in developing tourism products so that the profits may return to the community. 25 ASEAN and Korean university students will be gathered in Desa Wisata Nglanggeran to have a unique homestay experience, learn traditional culture, and visit representative tourist sites. Especially for this year, students will produce a travel magazine which will be uploaded on Naver Travel Plus and the Centre’s social media channel.

Lee Hyuk, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre noted that, “Desa Wisata Nglanggeran is located in Mountain Api Purba which has been selected as one of the UNESCO Global Geopark sites. It won the ASEAN Community-based Tourism Award in 2017 and ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Award in 2018 recognized for the community’s efforts to conserve natural environment and to develop sustainable tourism in the region. I hope this program could provide a platform for ASEAN and Korean youth to learn more about the community-based tourism and become an advocate for sustainable development in ASEAN.”

The 5-day program will offer a variety of experiences that include learning Karawitan (traditional musical instrument), Reog and Jathilan (traditional dance), and Batik (traditional dyeing technique). Along with the cultural experience, the program will also provide the youth with opportunities to visit the greatest Buddhist Monuments Borobudur Temple Compounds, three great Hindu divinities Prambanan Temple Compounds and eco-friendly goat farm in the village.

In 2015, ASEAN Secretariat announced ‘ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan 2016-2025’ which aims to increase the number of community-based tourism projects from 43 to over 300 by 2025. Since then, the ASEAN-Korea Centre has organized ‘ASEAN Community-based Tourism Program’ to support sustainable and inclusive tourism in ASEAN. The first ever CBT was held in Banghuris, Malaysia followed by in Seri Tanjung, Brunei in 2016 and in Ban Mae Kampong, Thailand 2017.
