Korea and Laos to collaborate in enhancing the competitiveness of Lao food and agricultural products and expand their business ties

Vientiane,Lao PDR – The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Lee Hyuk), Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Lao PDR, and Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry will jointly hold the 'Trade Facilitation Workshop for Lao MSMEs' from 16 to 17 May 2018 in Vientiane to share knowledge and experiences of Korean businesspeople and experts with Lao MSMEs and map out strategies for Lao food and agricultural products to gain greater access to the Korean market.
Lee Hyuk, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre, said, "Agriculture plays a vital role in Lao economy. Not only does it contribute to an estimated 20 percent of the national GDP, but it is also depended on by more than 80 percent of the population for their livelihoods. It is essential to introduce enhanced food packaging technologies and up-to-date market information to strengthen the competitiveness of the Lao agricultural industry and expand their exports to the global markets including Korea. To this end, I believe that the upcoming Trade Facilitation Workshop will provide a platform for sharing experiences and good practices on Korea's innovative food packaging technologies and developing effective marketing and branding strategies for Lao food products. At the same time, it will provide business opportunities for Korean companies who wish to trade Lao food products, thereby forging a mutually beneficial partnership among Korean and Lao counterparts."
On 17 May, the 'Trade Facilitation Seminar: Enhancing Competitiveness of Lao Food & Packaging Industry' will take place to provide information on the current status of the food and packaging industry in Korea and develop strategies for Lao food products to better access the Korean food market. The Seminar, to be attended by the Korean delegation of 9 businesspeople and experts and about 80 Lao government officials and businesspeople from Lao MSMEs, will contain four sessions,namely: 'Overview of Food Industry & Distribution Channels of Imported Food in Korea'; 'Laws and Regulations on Food Export to Korea'; 'Suitable Food Packaging Technologies & Design for Korean Market'; and 'Suitable Food Branding and Marketing Strategies for Korean Market.' They will be presented by CJ Freshway, National Foodsafety Information Service, CJ Cheiljedang, and Developus respectively. The Seminar will be followed by 1:1 business meetings and consultations between Lao MSMEs and Korean buyers to have more detailed and substantive discussions.
As part of the program, the Korean delegation will visit four industrial sites of their interests on 16 May to gain a deeper understanding of local industries and conduct market research. The industrial sites will include: M-point Mart, a local convenience store that provides a wide range of Lao products; Sang-A Business Center, a Korean-run multipurpose area that offers one-stop service to foreign investors in Laos; a Dao Coffee Company, a leading coffee producer in the country; and Vieng Thong Herb, a company that specializes in herbal medicinal products such as black ginger and herbal tea.
