The ASEAN-Korea Centre to celebrate the 10th Anniversary

- Marking the 30th Anniversary of ASEAN-ROK Dialogue Relations, the Centre will organize commemorative programs throughout 2019 -

Seoul, Republic of Korea - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Lee Hyuk) will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of its establishment on 13 March 2019. The Centre was founded in 2009 to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of ASEAN-ROK Dialogue Relations. Since then the Centre has been undertaking diverse projects to enhance shared prosperity and to promote cultural, academic, and people-to-people exchanges between ASEAN Member States and Korea. As 2019 marks the 30th Anniversary of ASEAN-ROK Dialogue Relations and the 10th Anniversary of the ASEAN-Korea Centre, the Centre will organize a variety of commemorative events throughout the year to bring the two regions to take a leap forwards to “People-centered Community of Peace and Prosperity”.

The ‘ASEAN-Korea Media Forum’ will kick off the festivities on 24 April 2019. The Forum will bring together the high-level representatives from the influential news organizations, governments, and academia in ASEAN and Korea to share their insightful knowledge, expertise, and information on how best ASEAN and Korea can facilitate two-way cultural exchanges with focus on ‘ASEAN and Korean Wave’. On 14-16 June, the Centre will host ‘ASEAN Week’ to introduce the value of ASEAN, ‘Unity in Diversity’, by featuring cultural performance, food truck, fashion show, tourism pavilion, and lifestyle exhibition. In October, ‘ASEAN Train’ will invite over 200 people from both ASEAN and Korea to take a nation-wide train tour together for a week. The program will showcase culture, history, and industrial development of major cities in Korea, which will foster mutual understanding of participants from ASEAN and Korea.

In addition, the Centre will publish the first edition of ‘ASEAN-Korea Journal’ as part of the anniversary celebrations in April. The journal will be issued biannually in both English and Korean, featuring up-to-date data in trade and investment, culture and tourism, and people-to-people exchanges between ASEAN and Korea, along with stories of ASEAN in Korea and recipe for ASEAN food. The inaugural edition will include the congratulatory remarks by Kang Kyung-wha, the Foreign Minister of Korea and Don Pramudwinai, the Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand. The special contribution by Dato Lim Jock Hoi, the ASEAN Secretary General will also be featured.

Secretary General Lee Hyuk noted that, “ASEAN-Korea relations have expanded and deepened exponentially since its establishment of Dialogue Relations in 1989. The bilateral trade volume between ASEAN and Korea has doubled from USD 75 billion in 1989 to USD 160 billion in 2018. The number of people-to-people exchanges have reached the threshold of 10 million in 2018. Having embarked on its journey as an intergovernmental organization 10 years ago with 21 projects, the Centre now carries out 50-60 projects annually that are tailor-made to the actual needs of ASEAN countries. With the Korean government’s New Southern Policy, we look forward to shaping the bright future for ASEAN and Korea to make ever more connected and thriving community together.”
