ASEAN contents companies to visit Korea to find opportunities for cooperation

-  ASEAN-Korea Centre to hold 'ASIA-EU Cartoon Connection 2019' (5.30-31, COEX Intercontinental Hotel) –


Seoul, Republic of Korea - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Lee Hyuk), together in partnership with Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), CARTOON, Seoul Business Agency, and Korea Manhwa Contents Agency, will organize ‘ASIA-EU Cartoon Connection 2019’ for two days from 30 to 31 May. About 40 ASEAN animation, webtoons and relevant character production companies will come to Seoul to showcase their contents and participate in seminar and one-on-one business meetings at InterContinental COEX, Seoul. During the seminar, presentations by experts from Europe, China, and Asia on the latest trends and success cases in content industry will be offered to assist ASEAN corporations to enhance competitiveness and to build prowess in content producing capacities. Further opportunities are available through one-on-one meetings on site, with national or international, institutional content producers, distributors and investors.


Lee Hyuk, Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre, noted that “ASEAN is anticipated to undergo appreciable growth in the scale of content industry, spanning across animation and webtoons, which is largely attributable to the expansion of the mobile-based platform market over the past decades. The high levels of economic growth rate and a large proportion of young population will add an additional momentum to the unceasing growth of consumption of cultural contents. In recognition of such growing public demand for cultural contents, ASEAN Member States are spurring themselves to seek joint production partners or collaborative projects to compensate for the not yet fully developed content production infrastructure in their national market base. I hope that through ‘ASIA-EU Cartoon Connection 2019’, the ASEAN companies participating the event will have fruitful opportunities with Korean partners, distributors and investors to establish cooperative partnerships and place a cornerstone for ASEAN-Korean Waves in Cartoon industry that creates a sustainable atmosphere for K-pop and K-drama.”


At a special seminar, there will be presentations by UK’s CBBC, France’s Studio Canal, and Denmark’s The Animation Workshop on the topic of Europe’s broadcasting and contents production environment during the first session. Following that, China’s Beijing Animation Game Industry Association, COMICFANS, and Shanghai Animation and Cartoon Association will deliver presentations on China’s content market and business environment for cooperation. Following the presentations from invited European and Chinese speakers, Paza Meonk, the founder of Indonesian character content company ‘Pionicon’ and President of the Indonesian Cartoon Association, will give a lecture on recent trends in Indonesian webtoon market and business environment for collaboration. Furthermore, Korean companies will give a pitch, mapping out areas of possible cooperation and business opportunities.


Meanwhile, celebrating a milestone year for the 30th Anniversary of the ASEAN-ROK Dialogue Relations and the 10th Anniversary of the establishment of the ASEAN-Korea Center, the Centre is expanding the spectrum of ASEAN-Korea exchanges to new business sectors that are relevant to the fourth industrial revolution as well as reciprocal cultural exchanges between ASEAN and Korea. The ASEAN-Korea Centre will host ‘ASEAN Smart City Forum’ in September, to facilitate effective ASEAN-Korea cooperation in the development of smart city networks and ICTs. There will be further ‘2019 ASEAN-Korea Bio Partnership Week’, ‘ASEAN-Korea Startup Week’, and ‘G-Star’ in November ahead of the commemorative ASEAN-ROK Special Summit, to contribute to promoting ASEAN-Korea co-prosperity and cooperation.
