Seoul, Korea - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Lee Hyuk) calls for academic essay entries under the theme of ‘ASEAN-Korea Digital Partnership in the Post-COVID19 Era’ for the 2020 ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest from 31 August to 8 November. The Essay Contest invites undergraduate and graduate students of ASEAN and Korea to share their young perspectives on the future of ASEAN-Korea partnership amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Interested applicants can submit their essays through online link (http://bit.do/2020akessay). The Contest is co-organized by the ASEAN-Korea Centre, the Center for ASEAN and Indian Studies of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy in Korea and the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Indonesia (CSIS Indonesia)

This year’s Contest, marking its 5th year, seeks to enhance academic and professional quality of submissions by engaging professors as advisors for the essays and allow co-authorship (up to 2 students). Scholars from the think-tanks from both ASEAN and Korea will join as evaluation committee. Winners will be awarded by cash prize (Grand Prize (1 team) - KRW 2,000,000, Second Prize (2 teams) - KRW 1,000,000 each, Third Prize (2 teams) - KRW 500,000 each), in addition to opportunities for presentation at the academic webinar and publication.

Secretary General Lee Hyuk noted, “This year’s contest invites essays on ASEAN-Korea cooperation in digital industries. The outbreak of novel coronavirus pandemic has accelerated digitalization in every part of our daily lives. It is thus more imperative than ever for the digital-savvy young generation in ASEAN and Korea, who will be at the center of transformations and future ASEAN-Korea partnership, to draw a blueprint for cooperation through digital technologies. I hope young scholars in ASEAN and Korea conduct research and demonstrate their scholarly works on how ASEAN and Korea develop their partnership in a wide range of digital sectors such as e-commerce, IT startups, e-learning, and social media.”

First launched in 2016, the ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest has received 580 essay entries from across 10 ASEAN Member States and Korea over the past 4 years, awarding 48 winners among the applicants. Notably, it has successfully established itself as the only academic essay contest focusing on ASEAN-Korea relations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea, the ASEAN Secretariat, and the ASEAN University Network support the event.
