ASEAN-Korea Centre to sign an MOU with the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement (KIRIA)
- To further facilitate the ASEAN-Korea cooperation in the Robotics industry -
Seoul, Republic of Korea - The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Young-sun) will sign an Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement (KIRIA, President Jung Kyung-won) at the ASEAN-Korea Centre on 12 July 2016. Through this MOU, the two organizations will explore joint efforts to implement investment and trade promotion projects, as well as human resource development and exchanges in an effort to facilitate cooperation between ASEAN and Korea in the robotics industry.
ASEAN and Korea agreed to enhance economic growth by intensifying cooperative activities, such as information sharing, technology transfer, and R&D collaboration in high value-added industries as outlined in the ASEAN-ROK Plan of Action to Implement the Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity (2016-2020). This MOU with the KIRIA, the only governmental organization in Korea devoted to cultivate intelligent robot industry would serve as a stepping stone for the ASEAN-Korea Centre to broaden the fields for cooperation between ASEAN and Korea into more value-added industries. Asian is rising as the biggest market for the robotics industry, which is expected to grow about 18% by 2018 (source: World Robotics 2015). Major ASEAN markets such as Singapore and Thailand in particular, are anticipated to show a great increase in demand amid rising population and progress in manufacturing, which makes the ASEAN-Korea cooperation in the robotics industry more important.
Based upon this MOU, the two organizations will make joint efforts to implement the Investment and Market Research Mission Program which will take place from 17 to 20 July 2016 in Singapore. The Program, which will be held by the request of Singapore government amid its growing interests in boosting the robotics industry of the nation, will provide Korean delegates composed of 5 Korean businessmen in the relevant sector with an opportunity to gain first-hand view on the robotics industry in Singapore and explore investment opportunities.
