Opening Remarks by H.E. Hae Moon Chung, Secretary General of AKC on the Seminar on the ASEAN Economic Community: from the perspective of Korea (11 February 2014)
A. It is my honor and privilege to extend our warmest welcome to all of you to the “Seminar on the ASEAN Economic Community: from the perspective of Korea”. This is the very first seminar held in Korea on the ASEAN Economic Community and its implications towards Korea.
B. With the year 2015 for the ASEAN Economic Community fast approaching, it is very timely and appropriate for the ASEAN-Korea Centre and the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy to co-host this Seminar on such important subject. The ASEAN Economic Community is anticipated to bring a new era of economic dynamism and resilience in ASEAN and create a new vibrant and brisk economic landscape in the Southeast Asia that could pave the way towards the enhanced cooperation between Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia in general and ASEAN and Korea in particular.
C. Committed to bolstering economic ties and cooperation between ASEAN and Korea, ASEAN-Korea Centre initiated today’s seminar in firm conviction that the launch of ASEAN Economic Community will be able to herald a new and invigorated collaboration to the ASEAN-Korea relations.
D. The realization of the ASEAN Economic Community will also serve as a catalyst towards enhanced cooperation for deepening regional integration in East Asia and generate fresh-momentum for energizing cooperation for translating the vision of East Asia Economic Community into reality by 2020.
E. For this seminar, we have brought experts from an array of disciplines to have a comprehensive look, through exchange of knowledge and opinions, at the progress and prospects of ASEAN Economic Community and its implications towards the ASEAN-Korea partnership.
