Excellencies, ASEAN Ambassadors, Distinguished guests,

ASEAN Chefs,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good Morning and welcome to the ASEAN Culinary Festival 2018!

It is my great pleasure to have you at the 3rd ASEAN Culinary Festival in Seoul.

My special thanks go to H.E. U Ohn Maung and Mme. Khin Than Nue for coming all the way from Myanmar to grace this event.

For the purpose of encouraging the Korean public to get a deeper understanding of ASEAN cuisine and its gastronomy tourism, ASEAN-Korea Centre has been showcasing the distinct ASEAN cuisine and its culture since 2016.

ASEAN is already internationally renowned as gastronomic paradise and many Koreans are no strangers to ASEAN food.

Why do we travel? I think we travel to see and eat.

According to surveys, gastronomy is ranked 3rd on the motives to decide a tourist destination following “Culture” and “Nature”.

Accounting for 12.4% of ASEAN GDP, Tourism industry has been making a substantial contribution to ASEAN economy.

Korean travelers are known to be very keen to try diverse cuisine of different countries and about 7 mil Koreans travel around ASEAN countries not only for beautiful sites but also for \food, be it an exquisite restaurant food or ordinary street food.

In that sense, The 3rd ASEAN Culinary Festival under the theme of “Gourmet Trips to ASEAN” holds its significance as it showcases ASEAN’s diverse rice-based dishes and various desserts, to diversify Korean people’s interest in ASEAN food, thereby promoting ASEAN as attractive gastronomic tourism destination.

In particular, this festival offers a valuable chance for Korean visitors to enjoy the authentic flavor of ALL 10 ASEAN Member States.

As such, I believe the ASEAN-Korea Centre can contribute to invigorating active exchanges in culture and tourism, and to make peoples of ASEAN and Korea closer to each other.

Finally, I would like to extend my special appreciation to 10 ASEAN NTOs and Embassies in Korea, and ASEAN Tourism Authorities in Seoul. With the full support from ASEAN friends and Chefs, we were able to organize this festival for three consecutive years. Again, thank you very much.

After the Live Cooking show, we are hosting a luncheon at this culinary festival zone. Please stay and enjoy diverse ASEAN dishes, desserts, and drinks.

I would like to conclude my remarks borrowing expression of Anthony Bourdain, a famed chef, by encouraging each and everyone of you to be a romantic to invest yourself, your money and your time in ASEAN food. Thank you and Bon appetite!
