Battambang: A City of Myths, History, and Flavor
Battambang is a city in northwestern Cambodia, located about 300 kilometers from the capital, Phnom Penh. The city’s name comes from the Khmer words bat (to lose) and dambang (stick or club), together forming the meaning “the lost club.” This distinctive name originates from the legend of Preah Bat Dambang Kronyung (Ebony Club King), or Ta Dambang Kronyung (Spirit of the Ebony Club).
According to legend, King Dambang Kronyung, who ruled the Khmer Empire in the early 11th century (1001–1008), once saw an unusually bright star in the sky and summoned his astrologer to inquire about its meaning. The astrologer foretold that on the seventh year, seventh month, and seventh day of the king’s reign, a new king would appear and claim the throne. Gripped by fear, King Dambang Kronyung ordered that all pregnant women of the palace, including the queen and concubines, be killed and burned. Among the victims was a concubine of the former king, who gave birth amid the flames. A monk rescued the severely burned child and raised him in hiding with great care. Although the child gradually recovered, his arms and legs remained bent.
As the child grew older, he set out for Angkor Thom, the capital, hoping to see the new king foretold in the prophecy, just like everyone else. Along the way, an old man entrusted him with a white horse and a bundle, tying the horse to the child’s hand before leaving. As the horse ran, the child’s arms, which had been bent from his burn injuries, gradually straightened, followed by his legs. When he put on the clothes from the bundle, he appeared every bit a royal figure. He then mounted the white horse and headed toward Angkor Thom.
Meanwhile, after once again seeing a brilliant star, King Dambang Kronyung consulted the astrologer and was told that the prophecy still remained. The king then saw, in the distance, a figure dressed like royalty riding a white horse toward him. Enraged, he hurled his club, but it missed its target and flew far away, landing deep in the forest. According to legend, the place where the club fell is where Battambang now stands, giving rise to the name “the land of the lost club.” Afterward, King Dambang Kronyung abdicated the throne and went to what is present-day Lao PDR, where he earned distinction and even married a princess. Eventually, he became entangled in political intrigue, returned to Khmer lands, and there met his end.
Today, a statue of Dambang Kronyung stands at the central roundabout in downtown Battambang. Revered as the Spirit of the Ebony Club, he is regarded as the guardian deity of the city.

Battambang’s History Preserved in Its Architecture
Over the past two centuries, Battambang has undergone profound transformations under the influence of a succession of forces. It served as an outpost of the Rattanakosin Kingdom (Kingdom of Siam) from 1795 to 1907, experienced French colonial rule from 1863 to 1953, entered a period of independence from 1953 to 1970, and endured the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979. Through these turbulent periods, the city accumulated a rich architectural heritage that bears the imprints of each era. Under Siam influence, Buddhist temples were constructed, while during the French colonial period in the early 20th century, around 750 shop houses and public buildings were built. After independence, the 1960s witnessed the rapid expansion of public infrastructure, including schools, universities, and an airport, laying the foundations for the modern city.
However, due to insufficient preservation efforts, buildings of historical value are disappearing one by one. A colonial-era treasury building and a veterinary hospital were demolished in 2009 and 2014 respectively, and a post-independence cinema was torn down in 2017. Despite these losses, Battambang still retains many buildings steeped in history. The Central Market, located in the heart of the city, is a representative landmark that harmoniously blends colonial and Khmer architectural styles. Nearby, the Battambang Provincial Museum, which opened after the former provincial hall was renovated, offers visitors a deeper understanding of the region’s history and cultural heritage.

Cambodia’s Rice Bowl, a City of Gastronomy
Battambang is also known as the “Rice Bowl of Cambodia,” renowned for its fresh, abundant produce and fragrant rice and cuisine. In particular, the jasmine rice variety Phka Rumduol is widely celebrated for its rich aroma and soft texture and has been named World’s Best Rice five times.
For this reason, Battambang became the first city in Cambodia to be designated a City of Gastronomy under the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2023. Signature local dishes include Battambang-style papaya salad, amok, and sangvak.

The Bamboo Train, a Creative Local Solution
About 20 kilometers from the city center lies one of Battambang’s most iconic attractions: the Bamboo Train. During the French colonial period, railways were built connecting Sihanoukville, Phnom Penh, and the Thai border, but years of civil war and the Khmer Rouge era left them in ruins. Although train services resumed in the 1980s, facilities remained poor and rural communities were left isolated.
Locals built makeshift trains by placing bamboo platforms on wheels in order to transport people and goods. This bamboo train was a grassroots solution born of everyday necessity. In the 1990s, engines were added, increasing speed, but as road infrastructure improved, the bamboo trains gradually disappeared. Eventually, the remaining tracks were repurposed for tourism, and the bamboo train was reborn as a signature attraction of Battambang. However, with recent railway rehabilitation projects underway, operations are expected to cease in the near future.

Battambang is a city in which myths, history, flavors, and community wisdom coexist. The legend of the king’s lost club symbolizes kingship and destiny, yet today the city is quietly healing the wounds of its past through cultural heritage and everyday life, nurturing new vitality. Like the legend itself, Battambang is a city in the process of rediscovering what was once lost. Here, resilience continues to thrive, rising from the ashes, sustained by the enduring will of its people.
