6-9세기
초기 말레이 국가가 형성되던 6세기경부터 9세기까지 브루나이는 폴리(Poli) 혹은 푸니(Puni)라는 이름으로 중국과 교역합니다.
7세기경, 브루나이는 자바 스리위자와(Sriwijaya Sriwajaya) 왕국의 속국이 됩니다.
13-15세기
자바의 마자파힛(Majapahit) 왕국에 복속되어 힌두교의 영향을 받습니다.
15세기경, 이슬람교가 전파됩니다. 마자파힛 왕국이 쇠퇴하며 브루나이에 독립된 이슬람 왕국이 탄생합니다.
16~18세기
16세기 초반, 브루나이는 보르네오섬 전역과 술루 제도, 필리핀 남부 일부분까지 영토를 확장합니다.
1521년, 마젤란 함대가 상륙합니다. 16세기 말부터 포르투갈, 네덜란드 등 외세의 진출과 간섭이 증가하고, 술루(Sulu)족이 보르네오 북부 해안 일대를 정복하며 왕국이 쇠락하기 시작합니다.
17세기 초, 보르네오 남부에 네덜란드 정착지가 세워집니다.
19세기
브루나이의 영토는 오늘날 브루나이가 위치한 사라왁(Sarawak)과 오늘날 말레이시아 사바(Sabah) 주에 해당하는 북부 보르네오 일대로 축소됩니다.
1847년, 브루나이의 술탄이 영국과 우호 조약을 맺습니다.
1888년, 브루나이는 영국의 보호령이 됩니다.
20세기~
제2차 세계대전 때 일본에 점령당하고 1945년에 해방을 맞습니다. 이후 영국의 지배를 다시 받지만 1984년에 세습 왕정제 국가로서 영국으로부터 완전히 독립합니다.
20세기 들어 브루나이는 석유와 천연가스를 발견하며 번성하기 시작합니다.
국왕 하사날 볼키아(Hassanal Bolkiah)가 1967년부터 현재까지 통치하고 있습니다.
History
6-9th Century
Brunei engaged in trade with China under the name of “Poli” or “Puni” as the states of Malay were forming from roughly the 6th to the 9th centuries.
Around the 7th century, Brunei became the vassal state of the Sriwijaya (or Sriwajaya) Empire.
13-15th Century
Brunei became a constituent state of Java’s Majapahit Empire and received influence from Hinduism.
Beginning around the 15th century, Islam began spreading in Brunei. Brunei became an independent Muslim state with the decline of the Majapahit Empire.
16-18th Century
Brunei expanded its influence to the entirety of the island of Borneo, the Sulu Archipelago, and even the southern part of the Philippines.
Magellan’s ships landed in Brunei in 1521. The Bruneian Empire began to decline in the late 16th century due to the rise of outside influence from countries such as Portugal and the Netherlands and the conquering of the empire’s northern coast by the Sulu.
19th Century
Brunei’s territory shrank to northern Borneo, in what is known today as Sarawak and Sabah of Malaysia.
In 1847, the Sultan of Brunei signed a Treaty of Protection with the British Empire.
Brunei became a protectorate of the British Empire in 1888.
20th Century
Brunei was invaded by Japan during World War II before being freed in 1945. Though Brunei returned to being under British rule, it gained full independence in 1984 as a hereditary monarchy.
Brunei began thriving in the 20th century with the discovery of oil and natural gas reserves.
Sultan and Prime Minister Hassanal Bolkiah has ruled from 1967 to today.
